Analysis and Control of Flapping Flight: from Biological to Robotic Insects2 by Luca Schenato Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences University of California at Berkeley Professor Shankar S. Sastry, Chair This dissertation explores flapping flight as an effective form of locomotion for unmanned micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). Flapping flight is analyzed from three different perspectives: biological, technological and control-theoretic. To the author’s knowledge, this dissertation is one of the first attempts to study flapping flight from a control theory perspective. From a biological perspective, the extraordinary maneuverability of many flying insects is the result of two main factors: (1) their ability to generate and control the production of large aerodynamic forces and torques from unsteady state aerodynamic mechanisms unique to flapping flight, and (2) a hierarchical architecture for their sensory and neuromotor systems. Inspired by real insects, this dissertation proposes a similar hierarchical architecture for the design of a control unit for micromechanical flying insects (MFIs). By combining averaging theory and biomimetic principles, it is shown that flapping flight allows the independent control of five degrees of freedom out of a total of six, as suggested but never experimentally confirmed by many biologists. From a technological perspective, it is shown that a simple proportional feedback is sufficient to stabilize a wide range of flight modes such as hovering, cruising and steering. This is done under the assumption of the linearity of the wing-thorax dynamics and that the feedback’s gain is a periodic function with the same period as the wingbeat. This is vital to the successful implementation of flight controllers given the limited computational resources available on MFIs. Moreover, the controller design methodology developed here is not limited to the mathematical models of aerodynamics considered in this thesis, but can be easily adapted to experimental data as it becomes 2This work was supported in part by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) under Grant MURI N00014-98-1-0671 and in part by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under Grant SEC F33615-98-C-3614.

Towards Bio-inspired Robotic Aircraft: CPG-based Control of Flapping and Gliding Flight

This paper presents experimental micro aerial vehicle (MAV) research with low-frequency flapping and articulated wing gliding. The importance of phase difference control via an abstract mathematical model of central pattern generators (CPGs) is confirmed with a robotic bat on a 3-DOF pendulum platform. An aerodynamic model for the robotic bat based on the complex wing kinematics is presented. C...

Towards Bio-Inspired Robotic Aircraft: Control Experiments on Flapping and Gliding Flight

THERE is a growing interest in the aerospace community in the development of robotic micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) to learn and mimic avian flight. MAVs fly in low-Reynolds-number regimes of 10 to 10, which corresponds to that of small birds or bats [1]. MAVs with wings equipped with multiple degrees of freedom such as flapping, wing twist, and sweep provide greater payload capability than insec...

First free-flight flow visualisation of a flapping-wing robot

Flow visualisations are essential to better understand the unsteady aerodynamics of flapping wing flight. The issues inherent to animal experiments, such as poor controllability and unnatural flapping when tethered, can be avoided by using robotic flyers. Such an approach holds a promise for a more systematic and repeatable methodology for flow visualisation, through a better controlled flight....
